One bold swing at success
PARKVIEW – The young Cole Stevens reveals the secret of his successful golf career.
When life hands you a golf ball, grab a golf club and hit that ball towards your boldest dreams.
A notion one would think suits Cole Stevens, a 15-year-old golfer quite well as his bold swing led to his selection to the Central Gauteng Golf Union team. The team will play in the 2016 U19 Junior Interprovincial hosted by the Mpumalanga Golf Union at the White River Country Club from the 11 to 16 December.
When Stevens was seven years old, he watched and admired his great-grandfather practising golf in their backyard. The intrigued little boy would watch earnestly as he admired the game his great-grandfather played so beautifully. He gravitated to the sport and enlisted his great-grandfather to coach him.
They spent three days a week for seven months practising the sport at a time when his great-grandfather was battling cancer from which he later died in 2008.
His dreams of success coupled with wanting to make his great-grandfather proud saw him work towards his ultimate dream of one day turning professional.
Among his many inspirations, the Parkview golfer highlighted Tiger Woods as being the golfer that has most inspired him. “Tiger has just done so much for the game of golf and I am happy and proud that I am following in his footprints,” he said.
Some aspects he loves about golf are that you get to know people and travel to new places. He also enjoys that he gets to be so close to nature all the time. The sport has not only taught him patience, it has also taught him to look for opportune moments.
Stevens has won so many awards that he could not mention them all but did mention that his lowest score to date was 66. He hopes to one day be a great ambassador for the sport.
Apart from golf, he enjoys representing his school in athletics. “I most enjoy the 100m and 200m sprints.”
He concluded with heartfelt thanks to his supportive family. “They ensure that I remain balanced and afford me every opportunity to enhance my skill and passion for golf with all its demands and practice.”
