World Cup spot still possible for SA women’s hockey team

PARKTOWN – The South African women will play Ireland and a win will get them closer to a World Cup spot.

The South African women hockey team is still in the running for a spot in the top five of the ongoing Hockey World League Semi-Final, as well as an automatic qualification into the 2018 London Hockey World Cup.

South Africa (SA) will take on Ireland today at 6pm at Wits University, which could be the make or break match for the South Africans in this competition.

SA suffered a 3–1 loss against Argentina on 12 July and two days later lost to Chile 1–0.

The women in green and gold then took on the United States who were the favourites to win the match but the local girls upset them 3–2. However, after that good showing, the girls went down to Germany 1–0.

Meanwhile, while the SA men have managed to put some numbers on the scoreboard during the pool stages, they haven’t managed a single win yet. The team’s morale hit an all-time low after being defeated 9–1 by Rio Olympics silver medalists, Germany.

The men will next play a relegation game against Japan on 21 July which will determine 9th and 10th place in the tournament.
