Decland wins gold

WESTDENE - Decland Wright emerged victorious at the U11 SA Club Cross Country Championships on 13 September

Decland Wright won the U11 South African Club Cross-Country Championships at Pacalsdorp in George on 13 September.

The local talented athlete has been breaking the boundaries and making a name for himself in the athletics world.

Earlier this year, he emerged victorious at the South African primary school championships, held in Paarl in March. And in April, Decland broke a record that has never been broken in 39 years, and again in July, he broke another record at a track race in Durban – The youngster also won a club championship in August.

Decland draws inspiration from his father Donovan, a former double-gold medalist in the Comrades Marathon, who also acts as his coach.

“I am so chuffed, I am glad I won a gold medal in this town, because this is where my father grew up and this is were he started his career.

Excited about her son’s achievement, Decland’s mother Marita Wright could not resist but show her excitement.

“I am so proud of him, it is so great seeing your child doing something so great…and now he is setting a new goal for himself,” she said.
