Klipfontein croc still on the loose

Fishermen have expressed their concern at the dangers facing those who frequent Klipfontein Dam due to the presence of the large crocodile that has been sighted several times, most recently sunning itself on the banks of the island... The municipality responds...

According to reports, a rather large crocodile was spotted in the murky waters of Klipfontein Dam a few weeks ago.

Most recently, after the crocodile was caught on camera sunning itself on the banks of the Klipfontein island, local fishermen have expressed concern that the presence of this massive reptile has not yet been addressed.
At the very least, they say, signs should be erected warning people of the danger lurking in the dam.

“There are cattle that graze just metres away from the water’s edge,” states Robbie Price, who has been involved in the happenings at Klipfontein Dam for well over three decades. “If this crocodile starts going for the farmers’ cattle, it won’t be good. Even worse yet, what if it starts going for the people who use the dam, not just for fishing, but those who live nearby.
He asks grimly: “It could get very ugly and then who is held accountable? The municipality, of course. There are no signs or warnings.”

Municipal Manager of AbaQulusi Municipality, Bonga Ntanzi, who is also currently in charge of Technical Services until a director is appointed, was unavailable to comment at the time of going to print.

However, he later assured the Vryheid Herald that AbaQulusi Municipality is now aware of the issue and is in the process of making arrangements to procure poles and signage, which will be placed strategically around the dam, warning of the dangers of the roaming reptile.
