Police seize AK-47 and arrest stock theft suspect in Nquthu area

Police arrested a suspected stock thief after recovering an unlicensed AK-47 rifle near Nquthu.

A 40-year-old man has been arrested after police recovered an unlicensed AK-47 rifle and ammunition during an intelligence-driven operation at Okhalweni Reserve in the Nquthu policing precinct.

Umzinyathi District police spokesperson Sergeant Siyabonga Nkwanyana told the Courier that the operation was carried out in the early hours of Friday, July 10, by the uMzinyathi District Crime Intelligence Unit and Newcastle Public Order Policing following information about a syndicate allegedly involved in stock theft.

Firearm to undergo ballistic tests

Police arrested the suspect at the identified location after he was allegedly found in possession of the assault rifle and ammunition.

The recovered firearm will undergo ballistic testing to establish whether it was used in the commission of any other crimes.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Nquthu Magistrate’s Court on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
