ONCE again, Saturday night was alright for singing, at Ella Mera, with crowds flocking to the local pub for another evening of karaoke.

The evening was a phenomenal success, with owner of Ella Mera, Michael Phytides, once again, with the assistance of the father and son team of Dustin and Geoff Dellow, setting the bar for future events of a similar nature.

Vryheid’s hunger for something different to the everyday smalltown ennui was evident in the tremendous turnout for the event. Locals enthusiastically took to the microphone as, one by one, and sometimes two or three at a time, punters proved their musical prowess, belting out well known hits by the likes of Neil Diamond, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Don Maclean, Billy Joel, and Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, to name but a few. ‘Golden oldies’ were the order of the night, it appeared, and patrons of all ages were hard pressed to find a better way to enjoy a Saturday evening of entertainment.

Due to the apparent popularity of karaoke at Ella Mera that has arisen since the first karaoke evening was held a few weeks ago, the organisers have arranged a karaoke competition, much along the lines of the popular talent show, Idols, just on a smaller scale.

A first ever for Vryheid, Ella Mera will be hosting a ‘Karaoke Idols’ competition, starting on Saturday, August 30 at 8:00pm. The event will take place fortnightly thereafter for several weeks, with prizes to be won for each event and a grand prize for the overall winner of the finals. As well as all of this, the finalists will also have their songs recorded on a personalised CD.

As with most things in life, terms and conditions apply, of course.

Entry forms are available at Ella Mera.
