SPORTS: Trail runners blaze a new course

Hosted in lieu of the regular Park Run, Wilson described the train run as a great success which attracted runners from towns across Northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Local athletes are testing their skills beyond the beaten path.

A good field of competitors arrived at Grey Goose Farm Lodge on Saturday morning, to indulge in the first ever Trail Run event.

Alan Wilson said the venue was fast becoming a sporting hub.

“We are trying to introduce train running. We want to host trail runs three times per year and this was our first actual event.”

Hosted in lieu of the regular Park Run, Wilson described the train run as a great success which attracted runners from towns across Northern KwaZulu-Natal.

He said many entrants said it was tougher than expected.

“We are looking at March for the next Trail Run. We want to host them as a series and expect the event to grow from there.”

Prize money of was awarded to the first male and female in both the 10 kilometre and 5km events, as well as to the quickest juniors across the 5km event.

Newcastle Harriers also lent a hand with the day’s timekeeping.
