Young stargazers flourish in nature

The children began their evening adventure not far from the lodge’s dam, and within minutes of arriving, heard the call of a fiery-necked nightjar.

The aroma of toasted marshmallows permeated the air.

Illuminated by the glow of the moon and surrounded by the symphony of nature, a group of 40-odd children enjoyed a perfect end to an evening of fun and education, at the Grey Goose Game Lodge Night Walk last Wednesday (March 20).

They walked away from the event attuned to the majesty of nature. Through the efforts of Grey Goose’s Hessie Malan, the Night Walk was organised to provide children with entertainment during the school holidays, while also educating them on their surroundings. “It was mostly my idea,” Malan explains.

The response to the Night Walk was considerable, and saw many parents clamouring for similar events in future, so their children could also be accommodated.

Malan hopes to host the event on a monthly basis in the future.

The children began their evening adventure not far from the lodge’s dam, and within minutes of arriving, heard the call of a fiery-necked nightjar.

They were then led by conservationist, Angus Burns to a natural cave nearby.

After having the children listen to and identify the different creatures and sounds they could hear, he gave a brief talk on the rich natural bounty South Africa possesses.

“We are privileged to live in a mega-diverse country. These countries are considered extremely special; we have hundreds of plant, animal and bird species.”

After a short hike, Burns gave another informative talk on the mythology surrounding the moon and the actual effects it has on the earth.

The children then embarked on a scavenger hunt by torchlight. An evening of education and entertainment concluded with the group braaing marshmallows over an open fire.

Grey Goose describes the event as a huge success.

“The children enjoyed it so much,” read a post on the lodge’s Facebook page.
