Mondlo school ‘travels’ back in time
With April having been National Freedom Month, the children looked into what freedom means to them.

Learners and educators at Khethelihle Primary School recently took a trip back in time to the year 1884.
Deputy Director of the Museum Services Research Unit, Radikobo Ntsimane led everyone through a ‘Time travel’ learning experience in order for them to better understand how Die Nuwe Republiek (the capital of which was Vryheid) came about and a better insight into the town’s history.

“The aim of the time travel is for us to attempt to experience what the people in the past were going through as they lived in their land. We look into the challenges they faced and how they responded to them. What were they talking about? What technology did they use? The objective is for participants today to look at the challenges they face and see if there are lessons to be drawn from the people whose history or whose past we are learning about,” explained Mr Ntsimane.

With April having been National Freedom Month, the scenario that was particularly looked into at Khethelihle was that of freedom, with the Dutch Colonists having fled the Cape Colony led by the English between 1836-1846 seeking freedom (vryheid).
