Parkrunners celebrate every event, every week, nationwide

Parkrun events are free, volunteer-led and open to everyone, regardless of age or fitness level

Vryheid parkrun is growing each week, but when you look back at how the whole concept of parkrun started, one has to look at the United Kingdom.
Parkrun started as a small event in Bushy Park, London, in 2004 with just 13 runners. It took nearly two years for parkrun to spread beyond Bushy Park.
The first parkrun event outside the UK was launched in Zimbabwe in 2007, followed by Denmark in 2009, South Africa and Australia in 2011, and the United States in 2012.
Today, it has grown into a worldwide movement with over 2000 events across 22 countries. This incredible growth is fuelled by its core principles: inclusivity, community spirit and the joy of running.
Parkrun events are free, volunteer-led and open to everyone, regardless of age or fitness level. The simplicity of showing up with a barcode and running or walking 5km has made it accessible to millions. Parkrun’s success lies in its ability to bring people together, promote health and create lasting connections.
From record-breaking runners to volunteer milestones, parkrun is more than just a run. It’s a celebration of health, inclusivity and environmental impact, leaving a legacy of community and cultural significance.
