Estcourt Athletic Club runners shine at 2026 Comrades Marathon
There were strong performances across multiple age categories.
Athletes from Estcourt Athletic Club (EAC) delivered commendable performances at the 2026 Comrades Marathon, which took place on Sunday (June 14).
Thousands of runners braved the chilly conditions to participate in the ‘up run’ from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.
Strong performances
EAC results:
David Mahlanga (60-69 age category) – 10:44:47;
Amrithchandhr Sewnun (60-69 age category) – 11:25:22;
Jane Schiever (Senior category) – 11:39:41;
Samukelisiwe Zungu (Senior category) – 11:49:27;
Mandlenkosi Zondo (40-49 age category) – 11:52:00.
The athletes demonstrated remarkable endurance and determination as they conquered the challenging route between Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
George Kusche and Gerda Steyn crowned 2026 champions
The men’s race was won by George Kusche of South Africa in an impressive time of 5:15:56.
In the women’s race, South African running star Gerda Steyn claimed victory in 5:44:53.
5th Comrades title for Steyn
Steyn’s triumph was particularly historic as she secured her fifth Comrades Marathon title, breaking her own course record in the process.
Her victories came in 2019, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026, making her only the second woman in the history of the race to win the prestigious event more than three times.
