Demoina Lane shops ravaged by fire
In the chaos and mayhem that followed, looters allegedly laid claim to whatever they could get their hands on until authorities at the scene managed to get the crowd under control and away from the blazing inferno.
CHAOS erupted in Demoina Lane earlier today as a shop burst into flames.
It is believed that the source of the blaze was an electrical box in the supermarket which caught alight, engulfing the store in flames.
In the chaos and mayhem that followed, looters allegedly laid claim to whatever they could get their hands on until authorities at the scene managed to get the crowd under control and away from the blazing inferno.
The fire department responded swiftly, but according to witnesses, they did not have enough water to calm the flames, until help arrived in the form of several water tankers supplied by ACE Mica and Afrimat, as well as several other companies and individuals who stepped in to assist . Firefighters quickly set about transferring water from the tanker to the fire truck, allowing them to attend to the blaze more effectively.
The flames eventually traveled further up Demoina Lane, according to an eyewitness account, spreading into two other nearby shops. It is alleged that the affected shops may have had pressed wood ceilings, which were easily ignited.
Firefighters and community members worked tirelessly to hold back the flames, despite the water shortage, with Neighbourhood Watch and Link Up Security in attendance to control the crowd, who stood by in disbelief as the flames decimated the shop.
Despite initial rumours that the fire was caused by a gas explosion and that people had been injured, witnesses at the scene claimed that there was no explosion. No one was injured in the incident.
