The dumpsite – what a difference

IT HAS taken since the end of July, but at last it seems that the chaos at the municipal dumpsite has been tamed by the private contractor and his machines on site. Certainly, people who have been avoiding the facility because it was simply too hideously daunting a prospect, can now use it knowing that they will not be tempted to vomit.

The area outside the site looks to be completely cleared and ready for rehabilitation. People are obeying the signs and refraining from dumping their refuse on the side of the road. Huge holes, called cells, have been excavated and await filling with rubbish for compaction and final burying.

You are required to sign in at the gate, and will be directed to designated dumping areas, depending on your load. It would appear that people are adhering to the instructions.

The mountains of unmanaged rubbish have disappeared, and on Monday an excavator was seen creating new cells lower down the slope. As general refuse is dumped from the trucks that go around town, there appears to be a concerted effort by people to extract any recyclable material. The final leftovers presumably are buried in cells. The smell is tolerable.

How long it will take for the contractor to completely restore order is not known. What it has cost to restore order is not known. What will happen once the contractor leaves the site is not known.
