A bloodbath was averted when police and a security company apprehended six men last weekend.
According to police spokesperson, Captain Shooz Magudulela, police were tipped off regarding an alleged assassin in Newcastle travelling in a red VW Golf 7 with ND registration plates.
K9 Unit members and the Visual Police Section conducted a search throughout Newcastle.
The vehicle was spotted at the taxi rank.
Mark Jacobs from a local security company was approached to enter the rank as his vehicle was without insignia.
He reported to Sergeant Daniel Trenerry from the K9 Unit that the vehicle had met up with two other vehicles, also with ND registration numbers, and they were leaving the taxi rank.
The vehicles split up in three different directions, but police officers were in hot pursuit.
Sgt Trenerry and Warrant Officer Sasha Naidoo apprehended two men in the red Golf at the intersection of Murchison Street and Sutherland Street, while Warrant Officer Pieter Snyman, Warrant Officer Santie Meyer and Sergeant Warren White apprehended the occupants of a silver Peugeot at a greengrocer’s parking area.
Two more suspects, travelling in a silver VW Polo in Allen Street, were apprehended minutes later.
Inside the Golf, police found a service pistol, and identified the driver as a police officer stationed in Durban.
They also found a .308 rifle with a scope, and 33 rounds of ammunition on the back seat.
Inside the Peugeot, police officers found another pistol, a bogus police uniform and a bottle of pepper spray.
It is believed the pistol’s licence number was scratched off.
Inside the Polo were pistols and some muti.
The six men were charged with possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, as well as conspiracy to commit murder.
They appeared in court and were remanded until September 30 for bail applications.
Police investigations continue.
