Sarel Cilliers learners shine across the board
Sarel Cilliers High School learners have been making their mark in sport, culture and community projects.
Sarel Cilliers High School learners enjoyed a busy week, achieving success in community projects, culture and several sporting codes.
The school’s Glow and Flow team won the Youth Citizen Action Programme (YCAP) District Round on August 5, earning a place in the provincial competition in Durban on September 16.
Nqobile Ndawo, Maseeha Ebrahim, Andiswa Mbatha and Ntandokazi Dubazane, guided by Miss Maharaj, developed a project addressing the shortage of sanitary products for learners.
Sport and culture
The girls’ cricket team beat Ladysmith High School by seven wickets, while the girls’ first football team recorded a 7-0 victory over Amajuba High School.
Sarel Cilliers’ under-18 netball team finished second at the Newcastle High School Women’s Festival, while the under-15 side recorded a 10-2 win over Phendukani.
The school’s first chess team finished 10th nationally at the Alex Forbes Top 16 Chess Championship, competing against some of the country’s strongest school programmes.
The school also hosted successful soccer and table tennis festivals, with the Open Girls and Open Boys soccer teams winning their divisions.
The isiZulu Department presented Impi Yothando, a play written by deputy head boy of culture Thobani Hlophe, exploring events surrounding the birth of the late Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi.
Community spirit
The school’s Term 3 SANBS blood drive attracted 84 donors, resulting in 60 units being collected – enough to potentially help save 180 lives.
The tennis season also got off to an encouraging start, with several players gaining valuable tournament experience.
