Ward 6 Post Office reportedly converted into shisanyama

DA calls for an investigation into the Ward 6 post office facility reportedly converted into a shisanyama and butchery.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in AbaQulusi has called for an urgent investigation into a Post Office facility in Ward 6 (Hlobane/Coronation area) that has reportedly been converted into a shisanyama and butchery.

The DA has written to Communications and Digital Technologies Minister Solly Malatsi, calling for clarity on how the facility came to be used for commercial purposes and whether the local community was consulted before the change took place.

Councillor Swelakhe Shelembe, DA AbaQulusi Whip and Finance Committee member, said residents deserve facilities that serve the needs of their communities.

“Residents deserve clear answers about what happened to this facility, who authorised the change and whether the community was properly consulted. Public facilities must serve the needs of the communities they are intended to support,” said Shelembe.

Concerns over public services

The reported change has raised concerns about the future of public services in the Ward 6 community, particularly for residents who previously relied on the facility for Post Office and related services.

The DA is questioning who authorised the change in use of the facility, whether Ward 6 residents were consulted before the decision was taken and what process was followed to change the use of the property.

The party is also asking who benefits from the facility’s current commercial use.

DA seeks transparency and accountability

According to the DA, the conversion of a public service facility into a commercial establishment should be subject to transparency, proper procedures and consultation with the affected community.

“We need accountability when public facilities are involved. Residents should not be left wondering why a facility that served a public purpose has suddenly become a commercial operation,” Shelembe said.

The DA has called on the relevant authorities to investigate the matter and provide residents with answers regarding the reported change in use of the facility.

The party said any individuals found to have acted improperly should be held accountable.
