MEC condemns beating of school girl

Grade 10 girl was lashed repeatedly with a sjambok by a woman who accused her of having an affair with her boyfriend.

The MEC for Education in KwaZulu-Natal, Ms Peggy Nkonyeni,  has condemn the incident where a Grade 10 girl was lashed repeatedly with a sjambok by a woman who accused her of having an affair with her boyfriend.

The girl of  Celumusa High School in the Nquthu area was said to have been hit over 100 times.  The culprit is alleged to have asked one her neighbours to capture the incident on a cellphone ‘to teach the girl a lesson’.

MEC Nkonyeni said “We want to condemn this barbaric and gruesome act in the strongest possible terms. For a woman to beat another woman like that over an alleged relationship with a man is unacceptable and such act has no place in a modern society. As a Department we are confident that the police are going to treat this with the urgency and the sensitivity it deserves,” said MEC Nkonyeni.

It was earlier said that the Prosecutor had earlier dismissed the case opened by the child but police have since confirmed that  a docket against the woman – who has a child with the man whom she accused of having an affair with – is being investigated.

The incident happened on September 17 but the girl has been recovering in the Charles Johnson Memorial Hospital in Nquthu and the cellphone images of the beating have only just surfaced.
