Nofta thanks Health Department for support
The Department of Health donated 50 walking sticks to the Newcastle Organisation for the Aged.
The Department of Health supported the elderly with its donation of 50 walking sticks to the Newcastle Organisation for the Aged (Nofta) last week.
Rehabilitation programme manager, Precious Buthelezi, delivered a talk on arthritis and its prevention at the Nofta service centre last week Wednesday, before handing out the walking sticks.
“Wearing high-heels, weight gain and smoking are common contributors to joint degeneration. While arthritis is common in old age, you can reduce effects with regular exercise. A brisk walk for just half an hour, three times a week is enough to make a significant improvement with blood pressure and problems and with arthritis, but we hope that these walking sticks will help you if you are already in need of support” advised Ms Buthelezi.
President of Nofta, Rajesh Ramdaw, thanked the Department of Health for the thoughtful gesture and assured Ms Buthelezi and chronic disease programme manager, Bongiwe Mavimbela, that the walking sticks would be put to good use.
