New intersection a boon for business
The Kirkland/Hardwick Street intersection is expected to be opened at the year's end.
By the end of the year, Kirkland and Hardwick Streets will finally meet. Businesses on Kirkland Street believe the new intersection of the two main busy streets will create a boom for them.
The mayor, Afzul Rehman explained the project should be completed in this financial year, and would include a new intersection boasting a full set of traffic lights. Workers on-site confirmed work will be completed by mid-December.
Adelle van der Watt and Thersia van Niekerk said the new intersection would assist businesses in the area, owing to better access for motorists and increased visibility for their restaurant in particular. Both women expressed concern at the amount of time taken to construct the intersection, however.
“We all hope the intersection will be for business benefit,” said Danie Nortier, dealer principal at a nearby car dealership.
Mr Nortier stated the construction work, coupled with the location of the dealership in a cul-de-sac, had resulted in a downturn, calling the site ‘a bit of a mess at the moment’. His only concern now, is the amount of traffic that will pass through the area into the new intersection. He added it was heartening to see the municipality delivering on its promises.
