Huge sewerage spill – – straight into Klipfontein Dam

IF THE wind is blowing the wrong way then you can smell it. It is a smell to revolt you. It is the smell of raw sewerage. It seems to be most noticeable if you are driving along the bypass, between the intersections with the Babanango road and the Melmoth road.
There, on the left, between the sewerage treatment plant and the new low-cost housing area of Bhekuzulu 6B, is an area of veld. There is a pipeline, presumably between Bhekuzulu 6B and the plant, and from a manhole it is spewing raw sewerage onto the veld. This sewerage is running downhill into a nearby stream, under the bypass and directly into Klipfontein Dam.
Thousands, perhaps millions of litres of untreated sewerage is flowing into Klipfontein Dam.
It has not been ascertained how long this has been the situation, and when the municipality was phoned for comment on Tuesday this week, it appeared that they were unaware of this spill. However, they declined to comment and referred the enquiry to the office of the Municipal Manager.
