Town boasts its first 3D cinema.
The Victorian Theatres now boasts a state-of-the-art 3D theatre.
It’s confirmed – Newcastle is now home to a 3D theatre featuring the latest releases. Property director for the NiDa group, George Heyneke, said recent renovations and extensions at the Victorian Theatres would see a complete conversion to the age of digital. New-age technology, he explained, was definitely accessible to all now.
Manageress at Victorian Theatres, Yolande de Witt said the largest theatre in the complex has already undergone a permanent 3D conversion, with the two-day project estimated to have cost R3-million. Digital screenings are set to kick off on Friday (November 1).
“We will also be selling 3D glasses which you can reuse,” Ms de Witt added.
Mr Heyneke is admittedly pleased Newcastillians will no longer have to travel to Pretoria or Durban for 3D movies, and said he was looking forward to this most recent development.
“For about 250 kilometres around Newcastle there is very little, so this is a great development for the area.”
Mr Heyneke said another exciting prospect was the airing of Bollywood movies in the near future. Describing the developments as ‘go big or go home’, Ms de Witt said Newcastle would air movies at the same time as bigger centres, including a host of specials in months to come.
