You will never know who is watching you this festive season.

The Community Police Forum (CPF) in partnership with the police have taken the initiative to be the eyes and ears of the community.

They will be on rooftops with their binoculars and radios looking out for bad guys.

The main idea of this is to reduce crime in the central business district.

A practical test run was done on Friday, November 1 to see if the idea would be a success.

If their mission goes according to plan, patrols will be conducted during busy days such as Fridays, month ends and during holidays.

The community is welcome to avail themselves to be part of this rooftop crime watch initiative.

Business people who have access to roofs are urged to come on board.

The test run was done on Friday by four police officers and two members of the CPF.

According to Constable Samukelo Dlamini this idea of watching from the roof will be very helpful, especially during the December holiday.

David Allen, a CPF member said: “We encourage members of the community to join in.

From now we will be mobilising this idea on Fridays,” said.

During the 30-minute test run, a sharp weapon was confiscated from an unknown man pretending to be a car guard, he eventually disappeared.

According to the police this instrument is used to gain entry to vehicles.

“I dedicate myself into fighting crime because I have a family in Estcourt and I don’t want them to live in fear,” said Mr Allen.

“Estcourt is our town. If we don’t get involved to fight crime, then who will?” he concluded.
