Nukani case postponed… again

Former Endumeni Mayor Thandeka Nukani is temporarily off the hook again after her murder case, which was supposed to be heard in the Durban High Court from November 11 to 22, was postponed.
This case will now be heard at the Durban High Court from March 25 to 28 next year.
According to Shirley Bujram, the wife of slain unionist, Grishen Bujram, Miss Nukani told the court that she does not have legal representation as she owes her lawyer about R100 000. Miss Bujram said that Miss Nukani told the High Court that she would be able to make that payment within three months.
Shirley said Miss Nukani asked to be given a chance and the High Court judge said she was lucky, because the assessor was in the hospital and the judge was planning to proceed with the case without a lawyer.
Mrs Bujram also alleges that Miss Nukani brought up her health issues, claiming that she had a medical certificate. Mrs Bujram said that the judge ignored her statement. It is alleged that the prosecutor told the court that this case needs to be finalised because the prosecutor is receiving pressure from the DPP’s office and the deceased’s family. Mrs Bujram, in her statement, said she complained to the DPP Office that the case is taking too long as a result of Miss Nukani’s health issues. The Bujram family have demanded that a state doctor assess Miss Nukani’s medical condition.

Mr Bujram was an ANC stalwart, who was vocal on corruption. Miss Nukani’s boyfriend, Bongani Shangase, was sentenced to life for his murder, and Nukani’s nephew Siyabonga was sentenced to 20 years for the same murder. Grishen was brutally killed in Sibongile on June 15, 2007. Later, Siyabonga turned state’s witness against Nukani.
