Burglars target primary school
An undisclosed amount of money was stolen from Drakensberg Primary School on Sunday.
Drakensberg Primary School was the latest victim of clever thieves doing the rounds in Newcastle.
On Sunday, November 24, the main office of the school was broken into and an undisclosed amount of money was stolen from the safe area.
According to reports, the burglars used crowbars to force open the doors of the office. They then gained access to the roof and disabled the alarm system.
“These people knew exactly what they were doing. They knew what to do to get past the alarm system and the cameras,” speculated school representative, Willie Miller.
The thieves also apparently stole four computers, which the school uses to record the security camera footage. These were later recovered under a bush in the school yard.
The money taken was from the ticket sales from the Christmas play held at the school on Thursday and Friday night.
Police spokesperson, Captain Shooz Magududlela, said that the case was being investigated.
“A case of burglary was opened and the suspects are still at large,” he said. “We have someone on the case trying to match footprints, to see if there is a connection between this case and another,” he concluded.
The manner in which the security systems were bypassed is cause for concern, however, as they were in place to prevent crime.
Residents are urged to double check their security systems before leaving their homes or businesses unattended for long periods.
