Promoting sport to fight drugs
The aim is to reduce the number of people who are affected by drugs by instead involving the community in sporting activities
A soil-turning programme took place in Matiwaneskop on Wednesday, November 13, to introduce a contractor who will be building a sports ground in the area.
The function was held by Mayor Vincent Madlala and Deputy Mayor Sindi Mfusi, along with Cllr T Msomi and ward councillor S Mkhwanazi.
The ground to be constructed will include sports facilities for volleyball, netball, soccer and other sporting codes. The aim is to reduce the number of people who are affected by drugs by instead involving the community in sporting activities.
Mayor Madlala told those present at the sod-turning event that he hoped they would use the sports field wisely. “By providing these facilities, we hope many tournaments will be held here. We urge the community to work together with the contractor and also the local council, as well as the people who will be hired in this project,” said the mayor.
Council has confirmed that “we are fulfilling the mandate of improving in particular a healthy lifestyle for our communities and advancing towards ensuring that the youth have sufficient platforms to compete progressively without being involved in drugs, substance and alcohol abuse”.
