Burglars target primary school
An undisclosed amount of money was stolen.
Drakensberg Primary School is the latest victim of cunning thieves doing the rounds in Newcastle.
On Sunday, November 24, the main office of the school was burgled and an undisclosed amount of money was stolen from the safe area.
The burglars used crowbars to force open the doors of the office, and gained access to the roof and disabled the alarm system.
“These people knew exactly what they were doing. They knew what to do to get past the alarm system and the cameras,” said Willie Miller, school representative.
The thieves also stole four computers the school uses to record the security camera footage. These were later recovered under a bush on the school yard.
The money taken was from the ticket sales from the Christmas play held at the school on Thursday and Friday night.
Captain Shooz Magududlela said that the case was being investigated.
“A case of burglary was opened and the suspects are still at large,” he said. “We have someone on the case trying to match footprints to see if their is a connection between this case and another,” he concluded.
The manner in which the security systems were bypassed is cause for concern, as they were in place to prevent crime. Residents are urged to double check their security systems before leaving their homes or businesses unattended for extended periods.
