Draper Street link to open next month

The project is expected to ease congestion in Lennoxton in general.

By mid-December, the Draper Street extension will be open for traffic.

Stating the project was ‘practically completed’, Thulani Ndlovu of the Newcastle Municipality said a high volume of traffic was expected once the road was completed.

However, he said the road was still awaiting other additions.

“We have recently appointed a contractor to install speed humps. The signage has been ordered and installation should be complete by December 13.”

Mr Ndlovu explained Draper Street was being opened to reduce traffic nightmares on other streets, resulting in the easy flow of traffic in the Lennoxton area in general.

The total cost of the project is R4 923 975.20, he added.

Residents have long awaited the completion of the project, which will see Draper Street, past Lennoxton Primary School join the lower half at the Nightingale Street intersection.

This will allow residents on the outskirts of Suryaville far easier access to the suburb and should ease congestion.
