Taxi rank benefits from ‘Adopt a River’ campaign
This initiative forms part of the Adopt a River project.
The Newcastle Municipality handed out rubbish bins to taxi drivers at the Newcastle Taxi Rank on November 20.
This initiative is part of the Adopt a River project, which was launched by the Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Rejoice Mabudafasi, earlier this year. These rubbish bins were sponsored by Umgeni Water in support of the Adopt a River project.
“The purpose of these bins is to keep our land clean, especially at the taxi rank, since it is next to the river. Taxi drivers should keep these bins in their taxis for passengers’ use,” said Zinhle Masango from the community services department.
In addressing the taxi drivers, Cllr Mandla Zikhali said there were ways and means to keep Newcastle the cleanest town in KwaZulu-Natal and in the country. He also emphasised the importance of a clean environment as it helped to decrease diseases that were related to pollution.
“We like to thank the municipality for coming up with this great idea, but we also challenge the municipality to come back and address the public about these bins so that we can assist in keeping our town clean,” concluded B V Mbatha from the taxi industry.
