SADTU shows support for 16 Days of Activism

Members bearing placards condemning abuse marched through the central business district to create awareness and urge the community to help put a stop to abuse

In support of the 16 Days of Activism, the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU) Estcourt Branch held a march and sports day on Wednesday.

Members bearing placards condemning abuse marched through the central business district to create awareness and urge the community to help put a stop to abuse.

Sbu Madondo from the local SADTU branch said that social ills like gender-based violence, rape, especially against learners and teachers as well as abuse of the elderly have to be highlighted.

“We need the community’s support to eradicate this and we hope that our awareness march gave this message,” said Mr Madondo.

After the march, the members convened at Lambert Park where a remembrance ceremony and sports day followed.

“We remembered the fallen heroes who are SADTU members and have passed away. We are telling them that we have taken the spear from them and will be moving on with what they have started in schools,” he commented. The day was organised by SADTU’s Gender Desk convened by Mrs Msiya and the Sports, Arts and Culture Desk convened by Bongumusa Mnguni.
