Blocked pipes make residents angry

Residents of Madras Road are complaining about a blocked sewer pipe in the area.

The pipe in question is across the bridge and railway line close to Rangoon Road. The pipes under the bridge are blocked, so the sewer water is backing up and affecting people further down in Madras Road.

The area close to the bridge is like a swamp with green standing water.

A Madras Road resident claims to have made numerous phone calls to uThukela to come and fix the problem. The resident was evidently told by uThukela that the sewer problem is caused by broken pumps at the sewerage farm. Due to the sewage not flowing past the bridge, it has caused the pipes to back up and flow into residents’ yards. People say they can’t even walk in their yards due to the horrible smell and flies all over the place. The sewer swamp is also littered with all sorts of rubbish, including beer and other empty liquor bottles. To make things worse, there are even TVs and a dead goat in the water.

Residents are fed up and at their wit’s end. “We really need this problem to be fixed pronto,” exclaimed one upset person.
