Bridge’s second phase to begin in February
Sources remain mum on what the second phase will entail, as well as its cost.
Phase two of the Allen Street Bridge project is scheduled to kick off by the end of February.
While municipal officials are yet to reveal what exactly this will include, head of the Communications Department, Zandile Masondo said the bid process was closed on November 22.
Once the appointment is made, the second phase is expected to be completed by the end of 2014.
Responding to concerns relating to some residents using the newly erected portion of the bridge to escape rush-hour traffic, officials adamantly stated this was illegal.
“Our department we have to make sure the road is fully closed to prevent those motorist from pass through this bridge illegally (sic),” the statement read.
As the contractor has not yet been appointed, the cost of the second phase was not disclosed.
However, the statement issued by the Communications Department said the project was necessary for the ease of traffic flow in the area.
A log and chevron tape have since been used to block access to the bridge from the Trim Park side.
