Reserve bank introduces new R2 coin

To commemorate the centenary of the Union Buildings.

The SA Reserve Bank on Wednesday introduced a new R2 coin commemorating the centenary of the Union Buildings.

The coins would be released for circulation and as part of a collector’s set, SARB spokesman Hlengani Mathebula said.

The coins would be produced by the SA Mint.

“The SA Mint will issue the sterling silver R2 crown as a single coin with a limited edition of 1000, as well as a part of a collector’s set, containing the crown, the circulation coin, and 20 commemorative postage stamps,” said Mathebula.

“These sets will be limited to 700. Both the sets and the R2 crown will be available at the SA Mint and Coin World.”

The front side of the coin has the country’s coat of arms, year of issue and the words South Africa written in isiXhosa and Afrikaans. The back of the coin has an image of the Union Buildings.

The R2 circulation coin will be introduced from early 2014.
