Mayor promises a cleaner town

Mayor, Afzul Rehman, has committed the municipality to ensuring a clean town.

“Today’s community initiative is all about projects that the community can touch, feel and see,” said Mayor Afzul Rehman.

Speaking at the hand over of three new garbage compactor trucks for the Community Services Department yesterday afternoon, Councillor Rehman said the trucks were what the ratepayers had paid for.

Clive Forrester of 600SA, both the sole importers of the compactors, and manufacturers of the trailers, and Christo le Roux of Stucky Motors handed over the new garbage trucks to the Newcastle Municipality.

“It is not a simple matter of bolting the trailer to the truck. It is a very complicated task,” explained Mr Forrester. “We were given a very strict deadline by the Newcastle Municipality to have the new trucks delivered by the end of January 2014. We are very proud to be able to deliver them today, a full month early.”

According to Councillor Rehman, the old fleets of trucks were almost all between 25 and 30-years-old in 2009. To date, they have managed to replace six vehicles.

“We will continue this drive to build a better infrastructure. Newcastle will be a model city, not only for the province or the country, but for Africa and the world,” said Cllr Rehman. “When we promise that refuse will be collected, it should be collected.”

Cllr Rehman and other officials launched a total of nine community-based projects yesterday, in Newcastle, Madadeni, oSizweni and Blaauwbosch.

“We are seeing the fruition of hard work. Promises were made by councillors and your mayor, we are doing our part to keep Newcastle clean, and we have asked the members of the community to do their part,” concluded Cllr Rehman.
