Going all out to save the rhino

In aid of conservation, the competition hopes to curb the shocking numbers of rhino killings, and will give the opportunity for the winner to help endangered animals.

Newcastle resident, Wayne Baxter is doing his bit for the conservation of wildlife.

He travelled almost 660 kilometres to find a handmade stuffed rhino, and is now campaigning to give his little friend as much media exposure as possible.

Mr Baxter is taking part in what has been dubbed the Biggest Game of Hide and Seek in SA, an initiative by a well known outdoor and adventure store, and based on the popular GPS activity, geocaching.

The store hid 30 hampers around the country, and started releasing the GPS coordinates of the hampers to the public on Facebook on November 26.

Inside every hamper is a set of instructions and a handmade rhino. Finders of the hampers must use this rhino to generate as much exposure for the store and the Endangered Wildlife Trust before January 31, to be eligible for a gift voucher to the value of R20 000 from the store, and the right to make a R20 000 donation to the trust fund of a nature conservation of their choice.

Mr Baxter is one of the lucky ones who found a hamper.

He has dubbed his rhino, Uhambo Yethemba, which means, journey of hope. The little guy has his own Facebook page, and every Like, equals more exposure, which will help Mr Baxter towards winning the grand prize.

In aid of conservation, the competition hopes to curb the shocking numbers of rhino killings, and will give the opportunity for the winner to help endangered animals.
