AbaQulusi launches debt relief scheme for residents
Qualifying AbaQulusi consumers can have 70% of eligible debt written off under the new payment scheme.
AbaQulusi Local Municipality invites consumers with outstanding debt to participate in a payment incentive scheme approved by council.
The scheme came into effect on August 1, 2026, and offers qualifying consumers the opportunity to have 70% of their eligible outstanding debt written off after paying 30% of debt older than 60 days.
Consumers must enter into an official arrangement agreement and pay the required amount in full by the applicable deadline.
Payment deadlines
The payment deadlines are:
Below R30 000: October 31, 2026;
R30 000 to R100 000: January 31, 2027;
R100 000 to R1 million: April 30, 2027;
Above R1 million: July 31, 2027.
Residents must keep accounts up to date
Consumers who participate must also keep their current accounts up to date for a period of 24 months after the incentive scheme is introduced.
According to the municipality, defaulting on the current account will result in the bad debt that was written off being reinstated on the account.
Who is excluded?
Clearance certificates for property transfers are excluded from the programme, while all government organisations and state properties are also excluded from the incentive scheme.
Where to apply
Residents interested in participating are requested to visit the AbaQulusi Debt Collection Unit at the corner of Mark and High streets in Vryheid to sign an incentive arrangement agreement.
