Free rabies vaccines
There hasn't been a rabies scare, but we'd rather be safe than sorry
The Department of Agriculture & Environmental Affairs has been administering free rabies vaccinations at various places around town.
Quintin Doidge and Nhlanhla Langa from the department were seen giving dogs and cats their rabies ‘shots’ as a preventative measure, as residents queued up with their pets for peace of mind.
“There hasn’t been a rabies scare, but we’d rather be safe than sorry,” said Quintin.
Rabies is a viral disease which is usually transmitted from one animal to another, including humans, through a bite from an infected animal. Rabies is usually fatal in both animals and humans if not treated immediately and properly. This is because it affects the central nervous system.
People are advised to go for rabies vaccinations if they are bitten by an animal and they don’t know if it has been vaccinated or not.
Pet owners are strongly advised to get their pets vaccinated annually against this deadly disease.
