Refurbished substation ups power supply

The Earl Substation will increase supply to the nearby neighbourhood, Arbor Park, Siyahlala-la and the new suburb Aquarand.

The R6,5-million, high-tech Earl Substation was formally switched on earlier today.

Rodney Goosen of the Electrical Department said the substation would feed power to the nearby neighbourhood and the newly-created area dubbed Aquarand, bordered by Hastie Street, Hilldrop and Allen Street.

This ties into a three-year plan to increase electrical supply to these areas, Arbor Park and Siyahlala-la.

Refurbishments at the Earl Substation include an increase in electrical panels from five to 12, a new switching building, a remote switching room, a battery room and a new switch gear.

A direct current (DC) charge will assist with electrical supply in the mornings.

“This is fancy and sophisticated equipment and the remote switch will prevent any deaths,” Mr Goosen proclaimed.

Once deputy mayor, Rachel Mdluli, had cut the ceremonial ribbon and unveiled a plaque, the final breaker was installed and the electrical supply went on with the push of a button.
