VEROS TRUTH VERIFICATION CENTRE it is all about eliminating the innocent persons, and singling out the guilty.

Pieter de Meyer has been doing detection of deception tests since 2008, and he has learnt from the best in the business.

“I had previously enrolled in a different academy,” said Mr de Meyer. “I then spoke to an advocate from Pretoria, who told me that he only accepted polygraph test results from people who had been trained by Nathan Gordon.”

Mr de Meyer then did his research, and found that the best place to study, would be through the Academy of Scientific Investigative Training in Philadelphia, PA. US, which was under the directorship of Mr Gordon himself, known as the best and most respected polygraph instructor and examiner in the world.

In 2013 his dream came true, said Mr de Meyer. The course was not easy, especially at his age and being away from home for 10 weeks, leaving his wife, Rene and his two boys, Jayden and Dylan behind. Mr de Meyer studied every night until 11pm, but managed to successfully complete the course with an average of 91 per cent. Had be been equipped with this type of training during his career in the SAPS, many more criminals would have been behind bars, he said.

What is Polygraph testing?

The polygraph, more commonly known as a ‘lie detector’ is a relatively new concept on the South African Market.

The operation of the polygraph depends on a human phenomenon, which was first discovered in the 1920s, and that is the direct relation between a physiological stimulation and a physiological reaction. As an example, if you recall an experience where something frightened the wits out of you, you may recall feeling a cold chill, a cold sweat or even shivering. These symptoms were caused by the danger your mind perceived.

A polygraph examiner, using highly advanced technology and equipment, asks the person being examined different questions. The answers to these questions will cause the subject of the examination to have different thoughts that lead to different reactions within their body. A polygraph instrument picks up these changes, and converts it into data that can be read off a graph. The examiner then in turn interprets the data, which enables him to know whether or not the person is being deceitful.

Who could make use of the polygraph?

The potential application of the polygraph is astonishingly far and wide.

– Personnel about to be appointed to senior management (known as personnel screening)

– Persons suspected of committing certain crimes/misconduct

– Insurance companies – prevention of insurance fraud

– Shops/Factories after loss of stock/material/equipment or money

– Business concerns – departmental investigations

– Transport companies – damage to and loss of cargo, vehicles or cash

– Banks

– Security companies – investigating loss of firearms, possible inside jobs pertaining to armed robberies, burglaries and other related crimes

– Domestic – partners being accused of adultery, relatives, abuse and maintenance claims.

– Anyone seeking the truth regarding any specific issues

“There are basically two ways to beat a polygraph. Either tell the truth, or don’t take the test at all,” said Mr de Meyer.

The internet has many articles on how to ‘beat’ a polygraph test. Mr de Meyer said that his training included the many techniques that could be used to attempt to deliberately fool a polygraph and the only way to pass a polygraph examination was to either tell the truth…or don’t take the test at all.
