Goods worth R1m seized in Newcastle raid
The goods included wig spray and various kinds of alcohol.
Counterfeit goods worth over R1 million were confiscated from various business premises at the corner of Scott and Kirkland streets in Newcastle.
Amajuba District SAPS corporate communications officer, Constable Nonjabulo Langa, confirmed that the raid formed part of a crime intelligence operation that involved the Provincial Counter Narcotic Crime Intelligence, Provincial Counterfeit, Contraband and Illicit Goods Unit; Newcastle SAPS; the Department of Agriculture; and Brand Protector.
“Information was received about shops allegedly selling counterfeit goods,” she said.
After receiving this information, Langa said SAPS officials applied for and obtained search warrants and swooped on the identified premises, where searches yielded positive results.
