A shortage of doctors is a national outcry however the Health Department has come up with different initiatives to address this problem for quality health care to be provided in all health facilities.
The Cuban Medical Training Programme is a project where students are taken annually to study medicine in Cuba and then return to serve their communities.
Estcourt Hospital is therefore urging all eligible candidates to apply for the September in- take. The criteria is as follows:
· Applicant must be from Uthukela district.
· Be financially needy (combined gross income of parents must be less than R120 000 per year).
· Candidates must be from a disadvantaged background .
· Must not be older than 35-years.
· Must produce certified copies of matric certificate/statement of results (with minimum of D symbol in Higher Grade English, Maths, Biology/Life Science and Physics).
Students whose parents are earning above R120 000 and are willing to pay the tuition fees for their children should apply as well. Preference will be given to those applicants who are without previous qualifications, not currently studying and unemployed. Applicants will be required to provide an unbridged birth certificate.
All successful applicants will be required to sign a contract with the KZN Health Department, which will compel them to work back one year of every year sponsored in a public health facility closest to the community they come from.
