“Education is the most powerful weapon that you can use to change the world,” Nelson Mandela once said.
While the importance of education cannot be ignored, it is the teachers and principals who arm pupils with this powerful weapon.
Last Friday, teachers and principals from the Newcastle area gathered at Tugela High School for an excellence awards ceremony.
According to Manuel Govender, principal of Newcastle High School, the excellence awards ceremony was the first of its kind for the Amajuba District.
“Teachers are the cornerstones for any educational system and we have to recognise the efforts they make,” he said.
Prem Bhagwandas, the Circuit Director for Education in the Amajuba District, gave a heartfelt speech on teachers’ dedication.
“We are here today for the teachers who have gone the extra mile and have contributed to the excellent pass rate KwaZulu-Natal had in 2013, doing the province proud.”
While the highlight of the event was rewarding teachers and principals, the ceremony was made even more special by performances of the choirs from Newcastle Senior Primary, Newcastle High School and Mbalenhle Primary School, adding to the day’s entertainment.
Beaming with pride, the teachers and principals who received awards on the day left the event with a sense of accomplishment.
