Vryheid Landbou High School – Prospective learners pay a visit

ON SATURDAY, May 24 Vryheid Landbou High School held its annual Open Day. All the prospective learners, their parents and guardians were addressed by our honourable principal, Mrs A van Niekerk.

Mrs van Niekerk presented an awesome slide show and everyone present was astonished to see how many activities are offered at our school. Our head leaders then addressed the parents and learners and shared with them the magnificent times we have at Landbou School.

The highlight of the day was the guided tour of the farm, led by Mr Anton van der Schyff and Me Leani Lourens. The day ran smoothly and yet again, we are proud to say, “Here at Landbou School, we are a dynamic team!” A special thank you to Mrs R Slump, the event coordinator.

At this point, we want to thank our Lord that our Head boy, Thando Khawula has recovered from the head injuries he sustained on Wednesday, May 21, during the rugby match against Sarel Cilliers. “Wing, we missed you on Saturday, but so thankful that you are fully recovered!”

Youth Show: On August 2, we at Vryheid Agriculture School will be hosting the first of an annual festival, namely: YOUTH@LANDBOU! The purpose of the festival is to showcase the talents and passion of the children of Vryheid Landbou School, as well as of our greater Vryheid area. The activities promise to be exciting and challenging. Here are some of the main activities: five-a-side hockey; art competition; box car races; choir competition; kite competition; a Landbou race; poetry slam; science quiz and wire car competition.

The learners will further show their skills in handling of horses and the ever popular Ossie show. We cordially invite you to participate in this festival and when the hunger pains start, you can buy scrumptious food from the food stalls.

In memory: In the midst of joy comes sadness. The death of Mr Joseph Sibiya, one of the key men on the farm, came as a terrible shock to the Landbou family. Mr Sibiya passed away suddenly after a short illness. As Mfundo Ntshangase, Head boy of the school, said in his tribute: Joseph will be missed as a mentor, on the farm and on the soccer field. Our hearts go out to Joseph’s family and to his many friends.

Personalia: Heartiest congratulations to the newest member of Landbou’s educator team, student teacher Ms Liani Lourens. Last week at her graduation ceremony she was awarded her Diploma in Adventure Tourism, achieved with Distinction. This certification is in addition to her degree in Quantity Surveying. Well done! We are all so proud of you!

On the sports front: On Wednesday, May 21, we played against Sarel Cilliers. Rugby: first team lost 8 – 27; second team lost 0 – 51; u/15 lost 0 – 41; u/14 lost 0 – 50. Netball: first team lost 10 – 21; second team lost 3 – 14; u/16A lost 5 – 20; u/15A lost 7 – 19; u/15B lost 2 – 12 and u/14A lost 3 – 11. Hockey: second team won 5 – 0 and u/16 lost 0 – 3.
