Educational mosque robbed by armed gunmen
The men stole passports, electronic goods and a small amount of money
Three armed men gained access to the Darul Uloom Mosque in Lahore Road this morning (Monday) between 1 and 2am.
The men broke through burglar guards on a rear window to gain access to the main prayer hall.
The men then split up and proceeded down two corridors towards where they apparently knew a security guard was stationed.
All the men were wearing balaclavas and gloves, with at least one carrying a visible firearm.
The gang grabbed the guard and forced him to the ground. A pistol was shoved in his face and the robbers demanded to know where the office was. The terrified guard pointed out where the main office was. They dragged the guard with them.
Once inside, some of them ransacked the office while others tied up the security guard with an extension cord and used duct tape to prevent him from screaming for help. The men stole passports, electronic goods and a small amount of money. They then left the guard in the office.
A student who heard the guard calling for help a while later raised the alarm.
The K9 Unit responded after the alarm was raised, arriving shortly after 4am. It is believed that the robbers loaded the goods into a vehicle and made their getaway.
The Darul Uloom is an internationally recognised teaching mosque where men from all over Africa and the Middle East come to learn Islamic teachings.
None of the students living on the premises (hostel) were injured during the armed robbery.
