Treverton College review rugby season

The 2014, College rugby season started with a bang at the 1st XV played in the Voortrekker Night League beating Voortrekker 2nd team and then a Canadian Team from Trinity College

Treverton College, being a co-ed school has a smaller enrolment of boys than many of the schools that they play rugby against during the season.
Nevertheless, the school’s Sports Co-ordinator and first-team coach Jason Hyam in a review of the achievements of the five- rugby teams that the school fields stated: “A season filled with firsts and great successes. Well done to all the coaching staff and players for once again flying the Treverton flag high!”
The 2014, College rugby season started with a bang at the 1st XV played in the Voortrekker Night League beating Voortrekker 2nd team and then a Canadian Team from Trinity College.
They won convincingly in a game that was used as the 1st XV trials for the season; they followed this up with another win against Linpark, setting up a positive start to what promised to be a great season.
They also experienced some losses against Grantleigh and Voortrekker. At the annual Treverton Sports Festival, Treverton fielded two teams. Playing against teams from all over South Africa and Zimbabwe, many from schools much larger than Treverton, the U19 Team won two games and lost the third by three points. The U18 team won two games and lost by four points in their last match. Hyam believes that this was great preparation for the season.
The greatest triumph for all the teams was the week of Founders Day, in mid-May.
The juniors played on Saturday against Weston, but the senior teams were moved to Wednesday, May 14 so that the 1st team game could be televised LIVE on Supersport, an amazing opportunity for the boys and great exposure for the school.
The 1st XV won 17-13 on International television, making the school proud and the five Treverton teams winning all their games for a clean sweep over local rival Weston.
In the same week, on the Saturday of Founders Day their opposition was Howick High School. For all the Treverton teams, this was a vitally important contest as it was the culmination of the school’s Golden Jubilee Celebrations. In addition, many past students were attending the celebrations, and the present pupils wanted to make the Old Trevertonians proud.
Once again, all five teams won on Founders Day making a clean sweep for the 50th anniversary and 10 wins from 10 games that week!
It was undoubtedly the great highlight for the season and a memorable 50th anniversary.
Treverton also plays rugby against schools that are not part of the Midlands area.
They played against the Durban schools’ St Henry’s and Clifton, and Thomas More from Kloof. The most successful team was the U16s, who only lost one match throughout the season.
There were also Treverton boys who did well at trials; Midlands – Oscar Haynes U16, Lungani Gumede, Khalipha Ngwenya and Struan Cowie U18.
The first XV vice-captain Tristan Pickering was selected for the KZN Academy Country Districts XV U18.
