The owner of a prominent local business selling predominantly pre-packed frozen chicken products is set to appear in court this morning (Thursday). This after he was charged with selling contaminated meat to the public.
Following up on information that rotten meat was being offered for sale to the public, Sergeant Rudolph van der Merwe from the Ladysmith Stock Theft Unit, accompanied by a health inspector, inspected the business premises in question on Friday, July 19.
During their inspection, they came across packaged meat on sale that had been processed into mince and wors. The meat was not fit for human consumption. About 493kg of this rotten processed meat was seized. In the processing room and cooler, another 120kg of meat waiting to be processed was found. This meat was also found to be unfit for human consumption. Altogether 613.9kg of contaminated meat was seized by police.
The 34-year-old business owner was charged yesterday with two counts relating to offences under the Meat Safety Act pertaining to the sale of contaminated meat to the public, as well as the Food Stuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfections Act relating to the deplorable condition of the processing area and general condition of the shop.
At the time of going to press, the business had failed to comment.
