More than 1 000 athletes converged on Newcastle this past week, to participate in the Provincial Indigenous Games.

All 11 districts of KwaZulu-Natal were represented in the event, which boasted 10 different sports codes, varying from Laba Laba (a board game) to the more intense Indhuku (stick fighting).

Provincial Spokesman for the Department of Sports and Recreation, Bheki Ncube, labelled the games, as the ‘best indigenous games ever!”

“Both the Amajuba District Municipality, and the Newcastle Municipality have been great to us, and we absolutely loved it here,” said Mr Ncube.

The games began on last week Thursday and continued throughout the weekend.

Quite a large crowd was drawn to view the more unique sport codes our country has to offer at Arbor Park Sports Grounds.
