THE council at its special council meeting on Thursday, August 28, accepted the embarrassing order from NERSA (National Electricity Regulator of South Africa). This comes after the NFP/ANC councillors approved the exorbitant ten percent increment [in the electricity tariff] at the budget meeting at the end of May this year. The Regulator orders the council to keep its electricity tariff increase at six percent, starting from the beginning of the council’s financial year in July.
During the budget debate, the DA cautioned the council about its unreasonable proposal and the impact therefore on the local economic growth following the protracted mining strike.
This is a slap in the face to the parties that do not have the interests of the people at heart, especially the poor that could have suffered the most according to the council proposed tariffs.
Even though we still strongly feel that other tariffs are bit too high, we believe this will provide some small of relief to the people of AbaQulusi who still face the hardship of slow service delivery while the problems are amounting in the administration and management.
