Provisions for pudgy pets

Over the next six weeks, Cocoa will attempt to beat the bulge by using the following steps

Is your dog’s breed to blame?

According to official Google search sources, dachshunds, basset hounds, Scottish terriers, golden retrievers and rottweilers are some of the breeds prone to obesity.

Since Cocoa, the 3-year-old dachshund’s health and vitality came under the spotlight, a strict diet had to be devised for the pudgy ‘pup’.

Over the last week, Cocoa has had no treats from the table top. Needless to say, she is not a happy camper. She has shown her disgust of this ‘new system’ by basking less and barking more.

Over the next six weeks, Cocoa will attempt to beat the bulge by using the following steps:

1. Portion control is key: The correct portioning of superior quality food is often more effective than specialised weight management foods. Although breaking the bank isn’t necessary, splurging a little will do no harm.

2. Exercise is essential: Cocoa’s levels of activity has dropped dramatically since her weight gain. For this reason, exercise will have to be introduced gradually. Physical activity won’t be an issue if their favorite toys are involved somehow.

3. Do not refuse a reward: Rewarding pets for their hard work is something that need not be frowned upon. If they’ve done well for the day, give them a pet-friendly treat like carrots or celery instead of last night’s leftover steak.

4. Easy does it: It’s important to set realistic goals for your furry friend. If you can’t lose those extra ten kilograms in a week, chances are your pet can’t either. Slow and steady is the name of the game.

5. Love leads to weight loss: Positive reinforcements either verbally or physically make the experience more enjoyable for pets. The whole point of the diet is to make it as enjoyable as possible for both the owner and the pet.

These tips and tricks should help pet owners plan their way to healthier, happier four-legged friends.
