Celebrating our senior citizens

There was plenty of laughter, education, gifts and great company at the International Day for Older Persons event held recently. The function was hosted by the Estcourt Senior Citizens Club and they pulled out all the stops to make the day memorable and educational for all that attended.

Club members and guests assembled at the Forderville Primary School hall from 1.30pm and the function got underway just after 2pm. During the welcome address, MC for the day Jackie Patricks explained the origin of International Day for Older Persons, which is celebrated on October 1 was officially declared in 1990.

This year’s theme, she said was ‘Leaving no one behind’ and reminded all present of the important role that senior citizens play in the community. The crowd was thereafter entertained by the Roses of Msinga who performed a traditional dance and had the audience ululating in appreciation. Mr Ghasitha, who celebrated his 68th birthday the day before, rendered a spiritual song.
Dietician Kim Bure was the next speaker who educated the seniors on proper nutrition. She explained that as the body ages, changes like decreased muscle mass and impaired senses, affect nutrition. She advised that a balanced diet, indicating the correct types of food and portion sizes, could counter-act illness. Ms Bure gave all present handy hints and tips to ensure proper nutrition.

Before representatives from the Social Development Department presented their talk, the Estcourt Bhajan Group rendered a song dedicated to mothers. To explain the rights of senior citizens, birthday girl Khensani from the Social Development Department provided pamphlets and gave an informative talk. She said that all older persons are protected under the Older Persons Act, which maintains and promotes their well-being and security and seeks to combat abuse.

A summary of each right was given before Khensani handed over to her colleague Sinzeni who explained how locals could form luncheon clubs, which were supported and funded by government. Salochana Naidoo and her daughter Subhadra thereafter had the audience working up a sweat with a fun exercise activity that was performed whilst being seated. It was great to see everyone participating and the smiles on their faces showed their enjoyment. The function ended with a vote of thanks and supper served by the Iskcon -Estcourt Food for Life team.
