Pupil stabbed in attempted mugging

“USE BUSY streets and walk in groups.” This is the advice of a father (who prefers not to be identified) whose teenage son was stabbed during an attempted mugging on Monday this week.

The Pionier High School pupil was walking home after school, accompanied by a female pupil. They walked down Spoor Street and turned into East Street when they were approached by two young men, 17-19 year olds. Suspecting mischief, the pupil told his companion to run, and she fled down East Street to a nearby home-shop.

The two muggers seemed to want to search the pupil’s pockets, starting with his school blazer, and when he resisted the one mugger pulled out a knife, raised it and stabbed the boy. Fortunately, the blow hit and penetrated his shoulder and not his neck, the wound later requiring stitches. The unsuccessful muggers then ran away.

A case has been opened at the Vryheid SAPS.
